On Wednesday, community leaders from across Greater Minnesota traveled to St. Paul for the CGMC’s annual “day at the Capitol” lobbying event. Thank you to everyone who joined us! It was great to connect with everyone and discuss our priorities for the 2026 legislative session.

The day commenced with a welcome from CGMC President and St. Peter City Councilor Keri Johnson, followed by remarks from Governor Tim Walz. Gov. Walz spoke to the group about the important conversations he has had with CGMC members over the years and the accomplishments that we’ve made together on priorities that matter most to Greater Minnesota, such as protecting LGA and shoring up wastewater and drinking water infrastructure. Gov. Walz wrapped up his remarks by reflecting on his tenure in office and sharing his optimism for the future of a united Minnesota.

The day continued with a look at the current legislative landscape from CGMC Executive Director Bradley Peterson. Peterson reflected on all that has happened in politics over the last year, including major events such as the targeted political violence against legislators, the record number of special elections, the Governor’s decision to not run for reelection, and Operation Metro Surge. Headlines aside, Peterson turned to the realities of session dynamics as the Legislature continues to operate with narrow power margins on top-tier issues, explaining both the CGMC’s goals as well as the challenges ahead. Attendees were then given a state budget update and in-depth explanations of our top policy issues, including local sales taxes, water infrastructure, and housing. The full presentation can be viewed here.

After lunch, Sen. Mark Johnson addressed attendees in lieu of a legislative panel, as other invited legislators were stuck at the Capitol engaging in their respective Floor Sessions. In his remarks, Sen. Johnson emphasized the need for lawmakers to move forward with a bipartisan approach to legislation, leaving divisive rhetoric behind and embracing good-faith negotiation.

Following Sen. Johnson’s remarks, CGMC members spent the rest of the afternoon meeting with their legislators and talking about issues most important to Greater Minnesota communities.

As is CGMC tradition, the day was capped off with a legislative reception and dinner at Mancini’s Char House, where a bipartisan mix of legislators representing both rural and urban districts mingled with CGMC members over a meal of steak and walleye. Click here to view pictures highlighting the excitement of the day.
