When a project begins in a community – whether it be residential development, communication towers, large sports facilities, or a wide range of other projects — environmental review is often necessary. The two main types required by state law are an Environmental Impact Statement and Environmental Assessment Worksheets. The goal of these reviews is to provide information about the potential environmental effects of the project. The type of projects that may require an Environmental Impact Statement or Environmental Assessment Worksheets, as well as the Responsible Government Unit, are prescribed in Minnesota Rules chapters 4410.4300 and 4410.4400.
The Minnesota Environmental Quality Board (EQB) administers these programs and reviews the categories every three years. EQB is seeking feedback on whether the categories should be modified. For example, should thresholds be increased or decreased? Should criteria be changed? As local government units who may responsible for these reviews, your input is important.
