Each week in February, the CGMC will be shining a light on a different topic that impacts Greater Minnesota cities. This week (Feb. 1-5), we are highlighting our top legislative priority: Local Government Issue (LGA).  

We are calling on the Legislature to make sure each city’s LGA is paid on time in full. That means absolutely no cuts to the program and no delays in payment. As cities continue to be on the front lines of pandemic recovery, it is vital that our state lawmakers understand that paying LGA on time and in full is more important than ever.  

Here are some of the ways you can help spread this message and join other Greater Minnesota city leaders by participating in LGA Advocacy Week:

1. Get informed

Learn how the LGA formula works and why it is essential to Minnesota’s cities in this LGA Explainer, and find out why LGA is vital to pandemic recovery. You can also hear about the importance of LGA from your fellow city leaders in this short video: 

2. Contact your legislators 

Call, email or send a letter to your state legislators stressing the importance of LGA in your community and urging them to protect LGA from any potential cuts this session. Tell them that your city’s 2021 LGA must be paid in full and on time. We encourage you to share the LGA Explainer and LGA is vital to pandemic recovery handouts with them as well.

3. Pass a resolution 

Encourage your city council to pass a resolution solidifying your city’s support for ensuring that LGA is paid in full and on time. You can see a sample resolution here. A Word version is also attached to this email.

When you send the resolution to your legislators and the other key lawmakers (they are all listed on the sample version), please also send a copy to the CGMC at CGMC_Communications@flaherty-hood.com.

4. Like & share our posts on social media (and add your own!) 

We will be posting about LGA on social media all week. Be sure to follow CGMC on Facebook (facebook.com/greatermncities) and Twitter (@greatermncities). Please like, retweet and share our posts — and add your own! — using the hashtag #LGAonTimeandInFull. We encourage you to tag your legislators in the posts as well!
