On January 26, 2026, Governor Walz authorized new security measures for the Capitol Complex based on recommendations outlined in a report by the Advisory Committee on Capitol Area Security. The new protocols add another level of complexity to Capitol visits, so if you have plans to visit the complex, make sure you prepare by familiarizing yourself with the new security protocols that are designed to keep everyone visiting the Capitol safe.

Visitors will now pass through weapons screening checkpoints at multiple areas of the Capitol Complex. These systems are intended to detect firearms and other prohibited items. There will only be four ADA accessible public entrances with weapons screening areas for the Capitol Complex:

  • Main south entrance underneath the Capitol steps
  • Tunnel from the Minnesota Senate Building (MSB)
  • Tunnel from the State Office Building and Lot C
  • Tunnel from the Minnesota Judicial Center

Staff and visitors will be required to go through the screening at each checkpoint. Bags, purses, and other large items will be placed through a bag scanner. You will not need to remove your jacket or empty your pockets, unless additional screening is required. View the map with security checkpoints here.

Additional Tips

Allow extra time when entering the Capitol, especially during busy times or days, like lobby days. We encourage you to carry fewer or smaller items if possible.
