The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) has announced a new grant program, billed as a “mini-bonding bill.” The Targeted Community Capital Grant program will allocate $18 million to non-profits and local governments for capital expenses (predesign/design, property acquisition, construction, renovation, etc.) that will provide, increase, or expand access to economic development, education, workforce development programs, or services to underserved communities or economically disadvantaged persons or groups.
While the types of projects potentially eligible are broad, a few examples that DEED highlighted include:
- Purchase or construction of a facility to provide work readiness skills training
- Expansion of an existing building to increase training services for individuals for whom English is a second language
Eligible projects can receive up to $1.5 million, with $18 million in total funding available. Funding will be distributed equitably between Greater Minnesota and the metro area. The application deadline is Monday, Dec. 6 at 5 p.m.
