CGMC continues to work with other members of the “signer’s table” on finalizing an agreement on how to distribute settlement proceeds from a lawsuit against several distributors and a manufacturer of opioids. The amount of money Minnesota will receive depends in part on how many local governments with populations over 10,000 opt-in to the opioids settlement by Jan. 2, 2022.
We hope an agreement will be reached this week on how the funds will be distributed. There is a tight timeline because cities over 10,000 will need to adopt a resolution authorizing their city to opt-in by the end of December. We encourage all cities over 10,000 to register with the national settlement website so that you have the documents to opt-in available to you. In order to register, you will need to enter the unique registration code that was on the notice your city received. We also encourage you to add discussion of the settlement to the agenda for one of your December council meetings.
We have been working with the League of Minnesota Cities on this issue and there will be a draft resolution available for your council soon. The League also plans to host a webinar tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9 to discuss these issues. Look for details on the webinar from League.
