Over the past several years, CGMC has focused attention on the challenge of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a ubiquitous class of chemicals linked to human health problems. Now, Minnesota’s state agencies are assessing the potential health impacts of PFAS and evaluating whether Minnesotans are being exposed to PFAS at levels above health-based guidance values in drinking water. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has established a goal of having 90% of the community water systems it regulates monitoring for PFAS by 2025. They began reaching out to communities this year for the first phase of the program, including several CGMC member cities.
We are paying close attention to this development and how it will interplay with other state regulatory efforts on PFAS. If you are one of the cities who has been contacted by the MDH, please let us know by contacting CGMC environmental lobbyist Elizabeth Wefel at eawefel@flaherty-hood.com.
