The new year brought forth announcements from several legislators who are not going to seek re-election in 2022, including two long-time legislators from Greater Minnesota.
On Wednesday, Rep. Paul Marquart (DFL-Dilworth) announced he will retire this year after serving 22 years in the House. Currently the chair of the House Tax Committee, Rep. Marquart has long been one of the strongest supporters of Local Government Aid in the Legislature.
Last week, Rep. Rod Hamilton (R-Mountain Lake) announced plans to step down at the end of the year after 18 years in office. Throughout his time in the House, Rep. Hamilton has been especially active in economic development and workforce issues.
Other legislative retirements from Greater Minnesota include Rep. Tim Miller (R-Prinsburg) and Rep. Todd Lippert (DFL-Northfield). Two other Greater Minnesota legislators are leaving their current positions to run for a different office: Sen. Paul Gazelka (R-East Gull Lake) is running for governor, and Rep. John Poston (R-Lake Shore) is running for the Senate seat that Sen. Gazelka is vacating.
In total, 18 current legislators have announced plans to retire or seek another office in 2022. You can see the full list here.
