State Auditor Rebecca Otto is slated to be the dinner speaker at the CGMC Fall Conference in Alexandria on Nov. 12. In her speech/presentation, Otto will discuss Minnesota’s infrastructure needs and how her office has been working with the University of Minnesota to develop a new infrastructure mapping tool. After a demonstration, attendees will get the chance to try out the interactive tool themselves. It should be a great opportunity to participate in shaping the development of a tool that could be used by the legislature and local governments to better understand infrastructure needs around the state.
House Speaker Kurt Daudt (R-Crown) had been invited to provide the dinner speech, but he is unable to attend due to other commitments.
The CGMC Fall Conference will be held Nov. 12-13 at Arrowwood Resort & Conference Center in Alexandria. Much of the first day will be devoted to LGA: why it matters and what we can all do to strengthen the program. Thursday’s lunch speaker is Rep. Paul Marquart (DFL-Dilworth), who will share his insights into the political dynamics of LGA at the legislature. He will be followed by a busy agenda of presentations and activities, including an analysis of why the Legislature failed to provide an LGA increase in 2015, presentations by city leaders on why LGA is important to their communities, and small group discussions that will help attendees be able to tell their own cities’ LGA stories. Former House Minority Leader and gubernatorial candidate Marty Seifert will also do a presentation on tips and tactics for successfully dealing with legislators, and CGMC staff will lead discussions and exercises aimed at getting conference attendees to feel more comfortable and confident in their meetings with legislators and other key decision-makers. Friday morning of the conference will focus on setting the CGMC’s policy positions and legislative strategies for the upcoming year.
